Cycle through water villages such as Giethoorn and Dwarsgracht. From there the peat diggers used to work in the peat bog. When an area had been dug out, they moved on with all their belongings.
A route full of highs and lows. Outside Steenwijk a ‘Limburg-style’ landscape awaits, full of slopes and undulations from the Ice Age. A ride over hills, through woods and marsh and along endless waterfronts.

In the season the Waterbus of Natuurmonumenten sails daily through De Wieden, between Sint Jansklooster, Blokzijl and Giethoorn (boarding at the Beulakerweg). You can take your bike; add it when booking online. That way you combine a bike ride with a stretch of boating through the nature reserve.
At Jonen, close to Giethoorn, a cycle ferry crosses the water in the season. Handy for shortening a cycle route through the countryside, or lengthening it. You pay by card or phone.

In the Giethoorn region and Weerribben-Wieden National Park there are many routes. You cycle through a landscape shaped by peat diggers and reed cutters, with winding canals, lakes and ditches. Some routes pass through water villages and nature where, with a bit of luck, you can see rare species such as the large copper butterfly and the otter.
In a low-lying peat marsh such as Weerribben-Wieden National Park the landscape is very varied. You cycle along village canals and historic buildings and through the centres of water villages. You also pass through areas with slopes and undulations from the Ice Age that feel like Limburg, alternating with woods, marshes and endless waterfronts.
