More about the hubs in Weerribben-Wieden

The hubs with the e-bikes are in Blokzijl, Oldemarkt, Steenwijk and Giethoorn. These places are easy to reach by car or public transport. Spread over these pick-up points there are 40 e-bikes in total that every tourist, and every resident, can take and use.

The project was started by the municipality of Steenwijkerland and made possible by the Regio Deal Zwolle. A first for Steenwijkerland and for a nature area: no municipality in the Netherlands had previously started a shared mobility project in a national park.

Duurzaam (Be)leefbaar Toerisme

Weerribben-Wieden more accessible

The hubs with shared bikes make Weerribben-Wieden National Park and the surroundings (such as Drenthe, Weststellingwerf and the Noordoostpolder) accessible to every visitor who wants to explore the area. The hubs are part of the Duurzaam (Be)leefbaar Toerisme programme (Sustainable and Liveable Tourism).

In this programme visitors, with or without a car, are invited to discover the area and given the chance to spread out. Weerribben-Wieden has many places that are (still) visited less often: nature, the fortified town of Steenwijk, Giethoorn, the water villages and the trading towns that once lay on the Zuiderzee.

Trend

Shared mobility

The project with hubs and shared bikes fits the trend of more and more people choosing shared mobility. They do not own a car, e-bike or scooter, but borrow one when needed. Shared scooters and bikes in the city are already widely used, but with the hubs in Weerribben-Wieden, Steenwijkerland is also introducing shared mobility in a national park. Besides e-bikes, e-scooters, scooters and shared cars are also part of the future picture for the hubs.

Management

Management and maintenance by the NoordWestgroep

In the project the municipality works together with the NoordWestGroep. Staff of this work development company of Steenwijkerland take care of the management and maintenance of the e-bikes. That way there are always enough bikes at the hubs and repairs are carried out quickly.

Frequently asked questions about the shared bike in Giethoorn

How does Giethoorn.com make it possible to use shared bikes?

Via Giethoorn.com you get access to the shared bike system. You download the DeelfietsNederland App, reserve an e-bike straight away and pay per quarter of an hour. That way you explore Weerribben-Wieden National Park, Giethoorn and the places around it. After use you return the e-bike to one of the hubs, including in Giethoorn, Steenwijk, Blokzijl or Oldemarkt.

Where are the shared bike hubs in the Giethoorn region?

The hubs are organised by the municipality of Steenwijkerland and are also listed on Giethoorn.com. There are four in the Kop van Overijssel: Stationsplein 4 in Steenwijk, Frieseweg 39 in Oldemarkt, Kanaalweg 1 in Blokzijl and Bartus Warnersweg 1 in Giethoorn. They are easy to reach by car and public transport. From any hub you can cycle straight into Weerribben-Wieden National Park and the area around Giethoorn.

How do the Giethoorn.com shared bikes help with exploring the Weerribben-Wieden area?

The shared bikes, which Giethoorn.com promotes, make Weerribben-Wieden National Park and the surrounding areas much more accessible. It is a project of the municipality of Steenwijkerland and part of the Duurzaam (Be)leefbaar Toerisme programme (Sustainable and Liveable Tourism). Visitors are invited to discover the lesser-known places in nature and the fortified town of Steenwijk by e-bike. Because the hubs are spread out, tourists spread more easily across the region, even without their own transport.

What are the advantages of using shared electric bikes in a nature park?

With an electric shared bike you reach a nature park such as Weerribben-Wieden and the surroundings, including towns such as Steenwijk, without a vehicle of your own. Visitors travel in an environmentally friendly way and spread out over the area, so they also discover the less visited places of nature and culture. It fits the growing trend of shared mobility.

How can I easily explore a large nature area without my own transport?

With a shared bike. In a nature area such as Weerribben-Wieden National Park you reserve an electric shared bike through an app, for example, and pay per quarter of an hour. The hubs are often easy to reach by public transport, and sometimes you can combine the bike with other means of transport, such as the eco Waterbus.
