The boating routes around Giethoorn are marked with coloured arrows and beacons. When you set off you receive an explanation of the route and tips about what you will pass along the way. The water is almost everywhere no more than 1 metre deep.
The most popular boating route takes about 2 hours and follows the yellow arrows. The route with the red arrows takes about 4 hours and goes through the village, across shallow lakes and through the nature of the northern tip of Overijssel.
From the Binnenpad you sail into Weerribben-Wieden National Park in about 10 minutes. Along the way you pass lakes with swimming water, a swimming island and a lookout tower.
With a punter (traditional wooden boat) you sail through Giethoorn the traditional way: you pole it yourself. Mol Groenewegen hires out a traditional punter for 1 to 6 people and a punter with a sail for 1 to 5 people, for a few hours or a full day. You receive instruction and an explanation of the route.
With the punter you are on the Bovenwijde within 10 minutes. On the other side of that lake the bottom is sandy and shallow, with vegetation such as bulrushes. You can swim there, and there is an island where you can paddle or have a picnic. With the sailing punter you can sail there too.
Mol Groenewegen hires out stable kayaks and Canadian canoes for 1, 2 or 3 people. After a quarter of an hour of paddling you are already in the nature of Weerribben-Wieden National Park. The water is calm and almost everywhere no more than 1 metre deep, and the canoe routes are well signposted.
Mol Groenewegen organises multi-day canoe trips from Giethoorn-Midden through Weerribben-Wieden National Park. You paddle at your own pace through reed beds, marsh woodland, narrow ditches and across lakes, past villages where you can moor. The route is shaped like a figure of eight, so that you end up back at the starting point. Along the way you stay overnight at campsites, in your own trekking tent or a trekking cabin; in some places it is also possible in a camping pod or a ready-pitched tent.
The trips are suitable for experienced and inexperienced canoeists and for groups. You can start on any day of the week and extend a trip. The daily distances start at about 12.5 kilometres, around 3 to 4 hours of paddling, and can be adjusted by arrangement. You book by phone.
The trekking cabins have pillows and come with a cooking stove, a kettle, a bucket and washing-up bowl, a jerrycan and a broom with dustpan and brush.
Bring a sleeping bag, pillowcase and fitted sheet, pans, plates and cutlery, a waterproof jacket, sun cream, a water bottle and perhaps lunch. With your own tent you also need a sleeping mat. Along the route there are picnic spots, restaurants and terraces.
You stay in the middle of Giethoorn, among gardens and small bridges and right next to a nature reserve. The stay is self-catering; Mol Groenewegen no longer provides bed and breakfast. From your accommodation you step straight into a whisper boat, e-sloop, punter or canoe, and you can walk and cycle right from the door.
