The centre is car-free
You cannot drive a car in the old centre of Giethoorn, and that goes for a motorhome too. The village is built on and around the water and many places can only be reached on foot or by boat. So you leave your motorhome on the edge of the village and explore Giethoorn on foot, by bike or on the water. You can read how to get there by car at how to get to Giethoorn.
Parking a motorhome for a day visit
Local businesses offer parking spaces spread across the village. You usually park at the provider where you start your day, for example a boat rental company or restaurant. At at least one rental company you can also park a motorhome or coach. For other businesses it is not known whether there is room for motorhomes. Dimensions and maximum length are not stated anywhere, so ask when you reserve whether your motorhome fits. You can find general information at parking in Giethoorn.
Not all accommodation in the village can be reached by car. A holiday home in the old centre, for example, cannot be reached by car, caravan or motorhome, and for that reason the campsite in the village has no pitches for motorhomes. You can read more about this at camping and campers in Giethoorn.
Staying overnight in a motorhome in the surrounding area
Giethoorn itself has no motorhome pitches. In the surrounding area, in and around Weerribben-Wieden National Park, there are. For example, there is a family campsite in Vollenhove with camping and motorhome pitches, which you can find on the page about camping in Vollenhove. According to the Campercontact platform, there are also motorhome locations in the area around Steenwijk, Ossenzijl and Kallenkote.
On the tourist site of Weerribben-Wieden, visitweerribbenwieden.com, you can filter campsites by motorhome pitch. You can also choose by facilities, such as sanitary facilities, electricity, water connection, the type of ground and whether dogs are allowed. Facilities and rules differ per site and can change. Check them with the motorhome pitch itself before you drive there.
Staying overnight outside a motorhome pitch
The municipality of Steenwijkerland regulates recreational overnight stays outside campsites in the Algemene Plaatselijke Verordening (General Local Bylaw). For the current rules, see the municipality’s website before you stay overnight anywhere that is not a motorhome pitch or campsite. Whether you may stay overnight at a business in Giethoorn is not known. So do not assume you can, and ask beforehand.
From the motorhome pitch to the village
If your motorhome is parked outside Giethoorn, you can get to the village by bike, bus or car. A bus runs from Steenwijk station to Giethoorn, as you can read at how to get to Giethoorn. In and around the village there are cycling routes through Weerribben-Wieden. More about this is at cycling in Giethoorn.
