Spring: March to May
Spring is one of the most peaceful periods of the year. Nature comes to life along the canals, the paths are quiet and the first boats are back on the water. March and April are very quiet; from May the number of visitors rises, but weekdays stay relaxed. A good choice if you want to sail without waiting and walk the Binnenpad at your own pace. Public holidays such as Easter, Ascension Day and Whitsun are the exception: those days bring peak crowds.
Summer: June to August
Summer is the season most people picture: long days, full terraces and the canals at their greenest. It is also the busiest time, especially in July and August and in the afternoons between 10:30 and 15:30. The way to enjoy summer in Giethoorn is to start early, be on the water before the crowds arrive and leave the afternoon for lunch and a walk. In summer a reservation is not a luxury: on busy days boats at the well-known departure points are taken quickly.
Autumn: September to November
September is still fairly busy, with pleasant boating weather and terraces by the water. October and November are quiet, with autumn colours along the canals and plenty of room on the water. For many visitors this is the ideal balance: the village is open and alive, but you can sail, walk and eat without queueing. A canal cruise with a skipper is a comfortable way to see the village when the days get cooler.
Winter: December to February
Winter is quiet to very quiet. Most rental boats lie idle, because the weather is rarely suitable for sailing yourself. The tour boats do sail, covered and heated, except when there is ice. The short days give the village a cosy atmosphere, the little bridges are lit and after snowfall Giethoorn looks its most photogenic. When it freezes for a few days, the canals and lakes become skating water. Not all facilities are open in winter, so check and book ahead. Best days of the week
Giethoorn is quietest from Tuesday to Thursday. Saturdays are busy, Sundays slightly quieter, and school holidays and public holidays are very busy in every season. If you can choose, a midweek visit makes more difference than the month you pick. Full details are on when is Giethoorn the quietest.
Best time of day
Even on a busy day you can see Giethoorn quietly. Before 10:00 the paths and canals are almost empty, between 10:30 and 15:30 it is busiest, and after 16:00 many day visitors leave and the peace returns. Plan your boat trip for the early morning or the late afternoon and use the middle of the day for lunch, a museum or a walk. Staying overnight makes this easy: you are on the water before the day trippers arrive. See accommodation in Giethoorn.
Best time for boating
From spring to autumn you can rent a whisper boat or a sloop and sail yourself; no licence is needed. The quietest water is in April, May, October and early in the morning in summer. In winter a canal cruise on a heated tour boat is the comfortable option. Whatever the season, book your boat in advance: you then know the boat is available at the time you want and where to go.
Best time for photos
Early morning light on empty canals, the autumn colours of October, the lit bridges on a winter evening and the village after snowfall: each season has its own pictures. For photographs without crowds, come before 10:00 on a weekday.
Rain or wind
Giethoorn is an outdoor village, but a wet day is not lost. A covered canal cruise, a museum visit and a long lunch by the water fill a rainy afternoon well. Ideas are on what to do in Giethoorn when it rains.
How long to stay
Half a day is enough to see the village properly: a couple of hours on the water, lunch and a walk along the bridges. In the quiet months a day trip is relaxed; in summer an overnight stay lets you avoid the busiest hours. Read how long do you need for Giethoorn.
